Practicing sustainability in companies includes to regularly watch the energy balance and reduce carbon emissions as far as possible. This can be achieved by an elaborate energy management system. DIN EN ISO 50001 is an established standard to evaluate the system’s efficiency.

An energy management system's goal is to reduce a company's energy consumption through the most efficient use of energy, not only saving money but also lowering CO2 emissions. Long-term success requires systematic analysis of energy data and regular checks of company processes for energy-related improvement and reduction opportunities. Employees should be sensitized on the topic of energy management to successfully implement the resulting measures in the long run.

The international DIN EN ISO 50001 is the globally established standard to asses energy management systems. The related certificate can be awarded to any company, regardless of its size, legal structure or industry sector. The certification process is conducted by an independent certification body.

An optional pre-audit can be performed at the start of the certification process in order to identify any weaknesses in the energy management system. The company's ability to be certified is subsequently determined. Both the completeness of the documentation and the effectiveness of the energy management system's implementation are evaluated for this purpose. This is done taking into account general and sector-specific laws and standards. In case of deviations, corrective actions are taken.

If all requirements according to DIN EN ISO 50001 are met, the certification body issues the certificate which is valid for three years. During annual monitoring audits, the continuous compliance with all requirements as well as the optimisation of energy related processes is verified. Following a successful re-certification audit, which is due prior to the expiry of the certificate's validity, a new certificate with a three-year-validity is issued.
